Thagda Dam 3d Model (CG Government Work)

The Project

My task for this project was to create a 3D model of Thagda Dam in Durg, Chhattisgarh, to be constructed by the Chhattisgarh government. The deadline for completion was just four days, with the model to be showcased in a ceremony attended by the Chief Minister on October 2, 2020. This was a significant opportunity for me, as I had direct contact with high-ranking government officials who were stringent about the deadline. They were determined to have the model ready before the ceremony and provided on-site footage and a computerized map for reference. I meticulously analyzed the data to ensure that every detail was accurately incorporated into the model.

The Challenge

Despite having only a few months of experience with Blender, I initially thought it would be easy to create the entire 3D model seamlessly. However, I faced challenges as Blender struggled to handle the numerous vertices in the model, causing my laptop to become laggy and unstable. Given the limited specifications of my laptop, I recommend against using Blender for such large-scale projects. Instead, I suggest using Autodesk 3ds Max. Another significant challenge was rendering the animation; I opted for the Eevee render engine in Blender due to time constraints. While the quality was not ideal, it was the only viable choice. Had I chosen the Cycles engine, rendering just 10 frames would have taken over a day. Ultimately, I successfully rendered a 133-frame animation in Eevee in five hours, completing it at 8 pm on October 1, just before the ceremony.

The Offer

Reaching out to government officials for this project was a challenge until I became part of the Durg district social media WhatsApp group as a COVID-19 influencer. How did I join the group, and am I truly an influencer? I was added to the group through the Durg_Bhilai_Raipur Instagram page admin, who invited me to join the COVID-19 influencer program initiated by the Durg district collector. While I am indeed a college influencer, being part of an Instagram page, it was this connection that allowed me to join the group. The group comprised influencers from various backgrounds, including meme creators, NGO founders, reporters, activists, and more. Our collective task was to create engaging and informative content to raise awareness about COVID-19. I produced unique content that resonated with many, leading to offers to work on other projects.
